For this project, I decided to make a comic detailing a very odd and slightly uncomfortable experience I had when I was somewhat younger to highlight what some girls, especially those underage, may encounter when playing video games online in a community populated mainly by men. I was reminded of this particular encounter when talking to one of my old online friends who brought it up before I had an idea for the project and decided it was a great subject matter. I have never made a comic before, much less storyboarded one, so this whole experience was new for me, and I think it shows. I went with a simplistic version of my art style, so it was easier for me to complete it with all of the other projects and finals I had. Many of the frames used were just the same sprite with slightly different expressions, one, so I did not have to draw a bunch of pictures, and two, to slightly model a dating sim for the irony that this is “Not A Dating Sim.” I referenced certain aspects of games, like status effects such as stunned and blindness, to help portray the emotions felt by me during this encounter. My favorite status effect I referenced but does not exists, at least as far as I am aware, was +Red Flag to signify how many red flags this person gave off. I had a few issues with formatting the comic for many reasons. For one, as I had never made a comic before, I did know how I should set one up. And I did not look up a reference because I honestly did not think about it until the work was almost done. The other problem was that I made certain pictures too big when I drew them, and shrinking them down made them too pixelated, so I had to reformat a few times. Overall, this was a fun experience. I had fun drawing the video game panels even though I referenced the wrong game initially and ended up with a combination of Code Vein and Remnant From the Ashes.
