HACK IT! DIY Dystopia: Surviving a Techno-apocalypse

HACK IT! DIY Dystopia: Surviving a Techno-apocalypse
was an art hack at UNC Asheville's CrAFT Studio during Arts Fest 2017. The event was planned and run by Victoria Bradbury's New Media Advanced Interactive Design students for Laura Bond's Powerful Stories Freshman Colloquium students.

Mentors from the New Media course led teams of 5-6 colloquium students to imagine, prototype and build objects that would be useful in the event of an apocalyptic scenario (such as an EMP).

The event resulted in an interactive guard dog, a camouflaged security mat, a 'Mother's Day' security camera with proximity sensor, and a companion robot. The event was followed by an evening public showcase where students could discuss the process and results of the day with publics. Also offered by the New Media students throughout the day were drop-in physical computing activities for people to learn to use LEDs and motors with Arduino and Raspberry Pi.
