Modernity
has
failed us!
The 1975
In our modern world,
technology has graced
with unimaginable power.
We have access to the
entire world at in our
pockets. We can talk to
anyone around the world.
We can learn anything.
We can be anyone.

This power is seemingly
benevolent. But upon
closer examination, we
find that this god-like
ability can have demonic
ramifications.

Pictured Above, E.O Wilson was an American Biologist and was the world's leading expert in
myremcology, the study of ants. He has been called "the father of sociobiology". IN his book, THe origins of creativity, he says that humans have "Paleolithic Emotions, Medieval Institutions and God-Like Technology".
Paleolithic Emotions and
God-Like Technology.

Instagram, Developed in 2010, Has captivated millions, allowing them to share images
of their lives. Almost 1000 images are uploaded to Instragram every second. In the
beginning, Instagram was simple. It was only used to connect individuals across the
world. But relatively soon after its inception, Instragram began introducing ads.
When companies realised the vast amounts of money that could be made advertisizing
on social platforms like Instragram, the naivety of youth was lost. Instagram began
using algorithms to predict what users were interested in, quickly moving away from
serving their users, to farming them. Harvesting every waking moment with
notifications, alerts, and messages. Keeping users hooked. Scientists like E.O. Wilson
soon understood that the brain is susceptible to these types of triggers. Our
paleolithic brain cannot help but want to check notifications, thus allowing this
god-like technology to permiate every inch of our society.

twitter
Twitter, like Instagram, started as a harmless social media platform. It was created
in 2006. While Twitter does engage in advertisements on the platform, they don't
push it as much as Instagram. Instead, Twitter's issues take form on a much larger
scale than that of Instagram's. Twitter has become the universal politcal nexus.
Twitter is now the foremost piece of technology used to communicate. The leaders
of our world use Twitter just as much as everyone else, and when one company is
is tasked with monitoring and governing the political dogma of our world, situations
can quickly become dire.

As recent as this week, Twitter has been at the center of many controversies. For
starters; billionare Elon Musk has recently purchased and remade twitter in his own
image. Recent decisions he has made such as allowing people like Donald Trump back
on the platform has raised many eyebrows. In other news, the artist formely known
as Kanye West, Ye, has been "active" on the site. In the last few weeks he has been at
the center controversy, as he went on an antisemetic rant.

Death of Social
With the invention of social media, many people have found themsevles dealing with
its negative ramifications. From depression and anxiety to loneliness and solitude.
To escape this whirlpool of confusion, one would have to unplug. But is that
realistic? Many people get their news from social media, they keep in contact with
friends and family through social media. How then, can you walk away from it?

Instead of walking away from the problem, we should seek out ways to fix it. We must
encourage tech companies to seek out better forms of interaction. We must return to
the days when these platforms served the users, instead of themselves.

Thank you for reading, I created this for my final project in NM 231. I chose to write
about social media because in my life, I have recently began to distance myself from
these platforms. I found them to be consuming, taking up all of my time and it became
detrimental to my work as well as my mental health.
