ENTER NASTY.NET

What was nasty.net?

Nasty.Net was a creation of 4 friends who like to surf the web for sharable links. A John Micael Boling, Joel Holmberg, Guthrie Longergan and Maria Olson combined their powers to form an "internet surfing club" which now remains as a time capsule of internet culture. The website opened in 2006 and lasted until about 2012 gathering a nit community of "professional surfers" and pioneering the creative space for new media artists. They were working on a universal system for artists to create and critique. However, in practice this idea stemmed a few problems from users leading to the untimely demise of Nasty.Net.

Artistic Environment Vs Social Media Platorm

Although the life of the website was fueled by the users the ability for them to comment is what led to the website's end. The year is 2006 and the social media scene is still fairly small but gaining traction. With a website reliant on the interactions of users the idea in place was for items posted to become shared between users in an attempt to create with one another or simply hang out. Although this vision was ambitous the freedoms that it left the users would shut it down. The purpose of nasty.net was a place for people of all over to come together in order to share things that they were interested in. The year that this website launched there was no major social media spaces. Myspace was even fairly new and this ability to interact with other people on the web was the appeal. This is common in today's internet space but at the time this was one of the first. A blog post was published on the website that drew attention in a way that the creators did not like, leading to them shutting down the site. The commenting took away from the experience of the website and became a tool in a malicious way the creators did not intend. It is ironic that this webiste's one major flaw would be the whole intention of the site, the ability to communicate with each other. This could even be seen as an artistic expression the creation killing the creator.

First of it's kind

Something particuarly interesting about this website is the simplicity in it's design. It is not fairly uncommon to today's social media sites with sign up buttons and post that you can interact with. What set's it apart is the diversity of the posts you can make, from mp3 to gif or video. This variety in media selection is on par with social media sites today but to be one of the pioneers is very impressive. This website has a feel of something that anybody with a little programming knowledge could achieve wich almost gives it the same vibe as a mom and pop shop within a city. Nasty.Net helped solidfy the means in which we recieve content and also the way we interact with content.
