I started out with a lot of different ideas for my narrative. I actually wrote out about three different stories, but this one seemed the easiest to navigate and it would also be the easiest for people to understand and like. My concept is that you are some sort of being, perhaps a god, who creates a planet in space as a form of entertainment and companionship. You choose a couple basic components of the planet yourself, and how the planet evolves and develops depends on what you chose. Once the planet has reached the end of its lifetime, the planet either creates its own demise or you decide that it has lived on long enough and you destroy it. Then, you try again (aka play through again) and create a different planet.
I think this concept came to me for a couple reasons. For one thing, I enjoy the aesthetic of space. I think it is beautiful to have space motifs and visuals in art. Another thing is that space is intriguing in the fact that it makes you wonder. You don’t know what is in space, you don’t know how long it goes on for, and you don’t know what kind of life forms are in it. To me, this is a good basis for many genres of storytelling. I wanted my game to be thought-provoking, but not too depressing in that sense. The fact that you play as a god makes the viewer think about celestial beings, and if there are celestial beings, why do they do what they do? Also, the fact that you get to destroy the planet ties in with this. Another thing I wanted to touch on in my narrative was a small snippet of what destroys planets. This makes the reader think about what humans impacts on this planet affect the future of it. For example, I include an apocalypse by disease, war, overpopulation, and resource depletion. Finally, the repetition of creating the planet, to me, adds a feeling of individual non-importance in terms of the universe and its timeline. When you think about space, you tend to feel small and insignificant, whether in a good way or a bad way. I like that you can feel differently towards this concept and it is thought-provoking. The last planet matters, but it also doesn’t, because you just destroy it and try again. It is for these reasons that I decided to use this story as my final draft for my project.
