Eddy's Labyrinth is something I came up with on the spot, like most of this project. I really didn’t know what I wanted to do for this project, but I initially wanted it to be a true-crime mystery. I soon realized that it would be extremely difficult in only two weeks. As I did the exercise that was provided to help us compartmentalize what exactly we wanted to do, the first title came to my mind: “Junko’s Uzumaki.” I really like Junji Ito’s horror manga, Uzumaki, and decided I wanted to do a maze, with different questions or choices. I was also thinking of the movie Labyrinth, and I thought maybe I would make it like that. But again, I found myself doing too much. As I was thinking about what I should do, I decided on the title “Eddy’s Labyrinth.” I like the name Eddy, because an eddy is defined as, “a circular movement of water, counter to a main current, causing a small whirlpool.” Which reminded me of a maze, or an uzumaki.
At first Eddy was going to be a little man with a spiral for a head, but I found that I couldn’t line up the ascii art well and it just looked weird. So then I decided to make him a demon...But then that looked really weird, so I opted out. But I kept the eye emojis from the demon and thought “what would this be creepy on?” and my immediate answer was a cat. So that is why Eddy is a cat! As for the reason why he is so creepy? Well, it’s because I wanted him to be creepy. An actual reason is because Eddy lives in this big labyrinth all alone, so sometimes he likes to trap people who decide to go in, because he’s just really lonely. That is mostly because he has human eyes.
I struggled a lot coming up with how it was going to play out. I decided quickly that it should just be based on an actual maze, so I found an ascii one, and just went from there. The concept is fairly simple. I just wanted to make the choices a little harder, so I split the ascii maze into 4 parts and added them as you go farther into the maze. Aesthetically, it was really easy to make. I like the color purple, and my initial inspiration from the uzumaki was the reason why it involves spirals. The font just caught my eye, because I really like angular, video game esk fonts. I just tried my best to make it look pleasing to the eye, because that’s something I find really important when going through a story or a game.
