The Renaming of Buildings at University of North Carolina

The trend of renaming buildings has come as of recent with many looking into the history of monuments and building names. There have been several spottings of such naming on campus found formally at Ashe, Hoey, Caarmichael, and Vance Hall.

These four halls had names of people who had negative origins. Oliver Carmichael overseeing an attempt of racial segregation while not contributing much to the university and Samuel Ashe having been a slaveholder, it is possible to see why the renaming of halls like these were prompted. With the renaming of these buildings, their origins now have accessable meanings with no connection to people with discriminatory pasts.
